Tower of Silence - Yazd, Iran 2015
The Towers of Silence are circular, raised structure built by Zoroastrians for excarnation. Zoroastrian tradition considers a dead body to be unclean and potential pollutants. To preclude the pollution of earth or fire, both considered sacred, the bodies of the dead are placed atop a tower and so exposed to the sun and to scavenging birds.
